Now this pick for today is random, and I heartily thank my iPod for reminding me of it! When I was little I was most definitely raised as a Muppets girl. Kermit and Ms. Piggy were my ish okay? That didn't change as I got older, which is why I have a large stuffed Kermit the Frog. It might also explain my love for flying pigs, though that one also has something to do with some books I read when I was younger....anyway, I digress.

The important thing is that if you haven't heard/seen/sung along to the Muppets performing 'Kokomo', you have missed out! The video is a complete classic and showcases all of the wonderful personality quirks that each Muppet character possesses. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and that it makes you smile!

It's the Friday after a long weekend and, like most short weeks, I feel as if it has been the longest ever experienced in recorded history. To celebrate the end of some things and the beginning of some others, I thought I'd highlight the biggest and bestest dance party/parade ever done in a movie. Who doesn't love Ferris Bueller's Day Off? And who doesn't recognize the absolute greatness of 'Twist and Shout'?! 'Shake it up baby now - shake it up baby!' (Imagine me singing along with possibly flailing limbs, trying in vain to recreate this scene.)

Ahh the 90's. Suggested by a coworker, this song is in memory of every girl who likes the summer (or maybe just the heat) and is going to be enjoying some sun this 4th of July weekend!

It's time for a classic! No self-respecting sing-a-long meme would be complete without something from The Little Mermaid - and it would be sad if one of the best wasn't mentioned: 'Under the Sea'. With Sebastian and his wonderful Caribbean voice and the full band that makes an appearance to accompany him, this song is tremendously fun to sing along to. I can pretty much guarantee that a good amount of booty shaking will happen as you listen to this and no one's going to complain if it shows up on your playlist.

Ok I'm really sad about this one. Having Buffy last week inspired me to do another class favorite this week - Xena: Warrior Princess. I totally bow down to my nerdy roots and say that I loved this show from start to finish and never really cared/noticed any lesbian overtones.

But I digress.

The important thing for Xena is that it's another show that's had a great mix of drama, action, comedy and musical
throughout its run. The episodes Lyre, Lyre, Hearts on Fire was a particularly fun one, where Xena finds herself preventing a war between Draco (warlord) and the Amazons by hosting a battle of the bands. FANTASTIC! My favorite song from that episode is 'Dancing in the Moonlight' performed by Joxer's flamboyantly gay brother Jace. It's on Youtube, but I can't embed it (SAD) so to watch you're going to have click here. Please click! It's a fantastically hilarious scene!

This week I'm taking Sing-a-Long Fridays back to my high school roots - Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Joss Whedon did an incredible job weaving music of all kinds through his show. It didn't matter if it was being sung by a character (Giles anyone?) or played in the background ("Virgin State of Mind" by K's Choice) music was always the unmentioned addition to the cast of the series.

This all culminated in an episode Joss was only allowed to make once the show made the shift from the WB to UPN: The Buffy Musical. It was EPIC. This particular episode had all of the characters chiming in for their mini solo or duet, letting each man or woman sing from the heart was is often the hardest to say.

IT WAS SO GOOD!

To mark the greatness of that episode, I've linked below Spike's (James Marters) solo, 'Rest in Peace'. The whole Buffy - Angel vs Buffy - Spike relationship battle was so hard for me because I was totally pro B-A, but then Angel left the show and Spike came in and was like the bad boy but better......my heart strings were tugged. It was hard.

This week I've chosen something a little slower, but not at all less of a classic: 'Feed the Birds' from Mary Poppins. Originally released in 1964, Mary Poppins is a well loved classic played over again for its amazing cast of characters and for its amazing music. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke star is this wonderful musical and their faces and voices make this story what it is - in my opinion anyway. 'Feed the Birds' is a Mary Poppins' solo, sung to the two children under her care to help them fall asleep. Hope you enjoy!

I am so excited for this week's Sing-a-Long Friday because I LOVE this song. Really love, as in this song is on almost every iPod playlist I have and it's a favorite whenever I want to get hyped up. Because who doesn't love Mulan's 'I'll Make a Man Out of You'?! While Mulan is not the oldest of Disney films, I'd consider this song an instant classic just because it has everything to make it unforgettable outside of its place in the movie. Great lyrics, an easily remembered tune, and the kind of character triumph that has the listener cheering along with the heroine. It reminds me of another Disney favorite, but I think I'll leave that one for next week.....

I was having a little trouble coming up with the song for this week, there are just so many choices, but my roomie helped me pick one - 'The Banana Boat Song' from Beetlejuice! It's sad how Beetlejuice has become a forgotten film of the 80's, so please let me remind you: this film is hilariously ridiculous! Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis - even pre-theft Winona Ryder - all make appearances in this film and do a terrific job. This particular scene is one where Alec and Geena, newly deceased and haunting up their old abode, try to scare the new owners into moving. I feel like this film incorporates horror and humorous in a way you just don't see in movies now. Enjoy!

Forever one of my favorites, no one could do a sing-a-long series without talking about Robin Hood: Men in Tights. If you haven't seen it, I am so sorry for you because this movie is HILARIOUS, a true Mel Brooks masterpiece, and showcases some of the best comedic acting. Cary Elwes does a terrific job as Robin Hood, incorporating all the charm and swashbuckling that the character is known for. Amy Yasbeck plays Maid Marion and her combination of sensuality and naivete brings the character alive in this adaptation. While it's hard to choose just one song from this movie, I decided to go with Robin's song for Marion, "The Night is Young". Enjoy!

Sing-a-Long Fridays (5/7)

I've decided that everyone enjoys a little pick me up on Fridays. It's the end of the week, a lot of us are stuck in the office with little to no time to ourselves, and it's hard to remember why we ever cared about the work we have to finish. Well to help us all down that road to the weekend, I decided a sing-a-long was in order - because who can be snoozing when they're already grooving?

The inaugural song to Sing-a-Long Fridays is one that has always been a favorite of mine: "If I Never Knew You" from Pocahontas. While not technically in the movie, it's featured on the Special Edition version of the DVD and is my pick for one of the most romantic songs ever.

What are your favorite romantic songs?
