Follow My Lead by Kate Noble

Jason Cummings, Duke of Rayne is feeling the weight of his responsibilities – one of which is to get married. Being the most sought after bachelor in London can be trying, so who can blame him if he seeks refuge from the voracious hordes of young debutantes at the decidedly female-free Historical Society? Female-free, that is, until Winnifred Crane marches up to the door, demanding entrance.

Despite her prowess as a historian, Winn is denied membership to the Society. So she daringly offers an unusual bargain: if she can prove the authenticity of a certain painting, she’ll be granted recognition, fame, and respect. But to do that, she must go abroad. And to go abroad, she must have an escort, even a stubbornly unwilling one…

Jason has no desire to accompany Winn on her adventure across Europe, but even he is not immune to Winn’s passion for her profession. As the journey proves more difficult than planned, they must work together to stay one step ahead of their rivals… and the closer they get to the proof Winn seeks, the closer she and Jason become. But as their adventure turns dangerous, can Jason keep this headstrong bluestocking safe? And what will become of their growing bond when the adventure ends?
~~

Before anyone suggests a tar and feathering, let me just tell you that I really wanted to like this book. Really. I don't read a lot of historicals anymore and after all of the good things I'd heard about Kate Noble I truthfully expected this read to be a slam dunk. I have to admit I'm not sure why it isn't.

In retrospect I'd have to say the biggest thing that turned me off was the timing. As I was reading I never got swept up in the story; instead I found myself checking how much of the book was left or skipping ahead a few pages to figure out what was going to happen next. Jason and Winn are an interesting couple, the both of them trying to negotiate the tricky steps into the next part of their lives, but the characters didn't hold on to me. George was as much of an ass as Noble I think intended him to be, but other than that I was for the pretty ambivalent.

I will say though that since my opinion appears to be in the minority that you should give this a try yourself. You never know what will work for you and this could be a prime example of that.

Lucky in Love by Jill Shalvis

Mallory Quinn has had enough of playing it safe. As a nurse and devoted daughter, she takes care of everyone but herself. And as the local good girl, she's expected to date Mr. Right. But for once, she'd like to take a risk on Mr. Wrong. And who could be more wrong than Ty Garrison? The mysterious new guy in town has made it clear that he's only passing through, which suits Mallory just fine. Besides, his lean, hard body and sexy smile will give her plenty to remember once he's gone . . .

For the first time in his life, Ty can't bear to leave. Helping this sexy seductress-in-training walk on the wild side is making him desire things he shouldn't, including leaving the military for good. As their just-for-fun fling becomes something more, Mallory and Ty wonder if they could really be this lucky in love. After all . . . anything can happen in a town called Lucky Harbor.
~~

I'm going to try not to gush about how much I love Jill Shalvis, but yeah, in case you were wondering, I do. This book is a great example of why, as both Ty and Mallory are flawed people trying to figure out the next step in their lives. Neither of them were looking for a relationship but circumstance and sparks came together and it just happened - maybe in not the most drama free way as usual, but it still happened.

Mallory has always been the good girl, fixing the lives of her friends, patients, and families to keep them all as 'ok' as possible - even when it's to her own detriment. By the time this book opens she's feeling so stifled that any 'bad' thing is looking mighty 'good'; which is of course the perfect time for military man Ty to appear. The element that worked best for me between them was how honest their communication was. They both admitted to the initial attraction as well the desire for it not to turn into anything serious. The fact that it did was just something that happened - neither of them tried to have hurt feelings or hold on too tight to the other. Instead I got to read a very enjoyable journey as these two hurt souls healed each other (corny I know, but trust me - it's GREAT in the book).

The supporting small town characters might have been a bit much for me this time around (Mal's crazy sister and the curmudgeonly Mrs. Burland tended to annoy me more than entertain) but I'm still excited to pick up the next books in this series and discover the HEA's in store for the rest of the Chocoholics :).

Mini Me: Legacy by Jayne Ann Krentz

Honor Mayfield was about to walk into a trap. She thought that her her chance meeting with Conn Landry was a fortunate stroke of luck. In fact, he had cleverly set her up a long time ago.

As a member of the Thoroughbred horse-racing set in California, Conn was well respected. But Honor was about to discover the real man beneath the controlled exterior. Too late, she realized she was falling for someone who was seeking to avenge a legacy of murder and betrayal. A piece of her past was mysteriously linked to Conn, and now they were tangled together in a web of deception... and desire.
~~

You always take a risk reading a romance from the year you were born and this one turned out to be about a 50% hit. Honor and Conn's whole relationship had that 'Harlequin' feel in that he was a bit of jerk and for some reason she continued to put up with it. Because she 'loved him'. Go figure right?

I thought the mystery of their past was well done in the whodunnit sense but didn't weave as seamlessly with Conn and Honor's HEA. It's definitely an old fashioned romance and if that's your thing go for it; I'm glad I picked this up for $.50 because as much as I love Jayne Ann Krentz this is just not gonna go down in the annals of time as one of my favorites.

Bride of the Rat God by Barbara Hambly

After donning a cursed necklace for the cameras, a silent screen starlet and her entourage are terrorized by an ancient demon

It is 1923, and silent film reigns in Hollywood. Of all the starlets, none is more beloved than Chrysanda Flamande, a diva as brilliant as she is difficult to manage. Handling her falls to Norah, widow of Chrysanda’s dead brother. She has always done her job well, but she was never equipped to deal with murder.

When a violent killing shocks Chrysanda’s entourage, and other weird happenings swiftly follow, Norah begins to suspect that some strange power is stalking the star. In Chinatown she receives warning that a curse has been placed on the actress as vengeance for wearing a sacred amulet in one of her films—and this curse could mean death for all who surround her.
~~

Bride of the Rat God was an unexpectedly enjoyable read. I requested it because of the great review on Dear Author but you never know - even trusted sources can't guarantee that I'll read it the same way. I can happily say now though that the action, romance, mystery, and paranormal elements all work together in a fantastic way. In fact I bet this would make a great movie as most of the characters and the time it's set in (1920's Los Angeles) are over the top and incredibly entertaining.

On the surface this is a paranormal mystery, with Norah trying her damnedest to figure out who (or what) is trying to kill her sister-in-law Chrysanda. There are spooky omens given by a 'Chinese mystic' and accidents that are just too planned out to truly be what they appear. It makes for a story you can't take your eyes from because you want to know what happens next. And me being a romance girl at heart, the slow development between Norah and Alec, from acquaintances to friends to something more, was another great thread to follow. Norah's working past the death of her husband and isn't sure she's ready for a relationship; instead of rushing it Hambly writes them both as people who slowly but surely finding a partner in the other. I highly recommend this title as something a little different that turns out to be a lot of fun.

The Gaithersburg Book Festival feat. The Bloggess!

In case you couldn't tell from my review of her new book, I'm a huge fan of Jenny Lawson. I think she's incredibly funny and yet at the same time speaks with sincerity to the crazy person in each of us. When I heard she was going to be vising Gaithersburg on the second leg of her book tour I knew I had to go - especially when I figured out that it was reachable through public transportation.

Though I arrived hours before her scheduled time I really recommend the festival to people in the area. It was a beautiful day and the whole set up was fantastic. There were various tents set up for author talks & readings, in addition to the winding rows of publishing houses and smaller authors showcasing their own work. With food trucks on top of that and a park in the middle of a huge children's area, the event was family friendly in the very best way possible.

Now as any good event stalker will tell you, to get a good seat you have to get there early. As in I claimed a seat after the speaker before the speaker before the Bloggess. Yes this means I sat around for 45+min listening to people I had never heard of but hey - when Ms. Lawson walked out (escorted by the first cops I'd seen all day) I didn't have to do anything but sit there and enjoy.

She started with a reading of Let's Pretend This Never Happened and then moved to a short Q & A session. I would have loved it if she'd been available longer but not only was she was one of the last speakers of the day, her autograph line was EPIC. Very much Dragon*Con proportions, as it went down a hill, wrapped around, and then went back up the hill. (Does anyone else wonder what other authors think when they see this kind of thing? Like are they happy for their peer's success, or jealous that their line had 5 people in it but they still have to sit in the sun for a while?)

I tried to balance both video and pictures so I couldn't get her whole chapter reading. I got a good half of it though and it makes me more than a little interested in purchasing the audio book (and since in general I never want to buy audio books, this says a lot). If you click over to the full video on YouTube I also included the questions (as I mostly remember them) from the Q&A. Happy Monday!

Let Me In by Callie Croix *ARC Revew*

On leave for Thanksgiving, the last thing marine lieutenant Talia Barnett expects to find is Liam Brodie waiting for her at the airport. He’s had a starring role in her fantasies for the past two years, and although she’d love to make them a reality, she has a dark secret that prevents her from taking things further.

A former Marine, Liam’s specialty is planning tactical operations, and that’s just what he plans to do to win Talia. The woman has kept him at arm’s length for too long, and this time he’s finally going to claim her—body and heart.

What begins as comfort quickly turns hot. When Liam shows Talia a hint of the dominant nature inside him, the submissive part of her flares to life. Though she desires him, she’s going back on deployment and doesn’t want to dump all her drama on him. Will he find a way to break through the protective walls around her heart and convince her they have a future that goes far beyond the bedroom?
~~

I haven't read a full blown erotic romance in a while but I've got to say Callie Croix is an author to watch - this book is hot, fun, and yet full of emotion. Tal and Liam's HEA is believable and realistic considering all that they've both been through and I commend Croix for handling some tough topics very well.

Tal and Liam have known each other for a while - she's friends with his sister and at this point considered to be one of the family. Which would be great if Tal didn't have the experience of knowing exactly what happens when 'family' goes very very bad. She's determined not to lean on the Brodie's any more than strictly necessary while Liam is just as focused on making her accept them - and his feelings for her.

There's a delicate balance between all of these factors when things with Tal's family finally come to a head, and Liam finally gets the chance to show her how trustworthy he is. The story builds quickly to some very steamy scenes between the two and those evolve to a more emotional connection. I loved Tal and Liam and think Croix did a great job moving between both of them; my favorite contemporaries always end up being the ones where I get to know the motivations and feelings of both the lead characters.

It Started With a Text (Part I)

Jessy: Um the chapter of your book where she gets lost and calls her husband...we've had this exact conversation..."Dana there's bushes, no I don't know what bus I'm on...why would I need to know that. I think I might be in MD. Help me"

Me: Well then maybe you need her ever special and unique GPS

Jessy: Or I can just keep calling you and hope you find me... like Waldo. Years later you will write a book about how I have impacted your life and then you'll be rich. You should thank me now.

Me: Oh don't worry I'm writing my thank you blog post now so I can be ready to post it years from now.

Me (again): There's gonna be a part about drunkenly trying to climb over snow drifts and ghetto cousins

Jessy: You should because Dana who else gets into fights with garbage cans, dances with strangers while dressed like a gnome, and comes drunkenly into your room at God knows what time tell you they want eggs?

Me: Example Chapter One: How We Tried to Get Home in a Snowstorm...and Almost Died

Me (again): Example Chapter Two: How I Left the House for a Few Hours...and Almost Died (in a gas explosion)

Jessy: Exactly! While telling some random man who was trying to murder me "Get away from me I don't need help! Don't touch me!"

Jessy (again): Ok maybe we could omit chapter two cause that makes it sound like I was trying to kill you and really it was just AN ACCIDENT

Me: Have you been reading The Bloggess? NOTHING'S an accident

*Yes I know this post makes little to no sense. If you really don't get it then I advise you to either head over to The Bloggess or even better pick up a copy of her new book Let's Pretend This Never Happened.

**No I don't have a book review to post today. I've spent the past week rereading books I've already posted reviews for because sometimes I'm a horrible blogger.

***Yes I have more chapter titles. They'll most likely be revealed in Part II (if I make it to a part II) so you should probably just keep checking back for more.

Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

It’s vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart…

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she’d rather not know. And now that she’s an adult, she also realizes that some things she knows about, she’d rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.

There’s a thing or two she’d like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric’s front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s set out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.
~~

Ok yeah, filler books. I guess they serve a purpose (I'm sure someone could make the argument to me) but in any series they're defintiely not my favorite. Harris does better than others with Deadlocked, I think because her writing style just grabs me from page one. The issue is that when you're done reading one of these 'filler' books you're usually left unsatisfied because nothing has happened. Things might have gone by on the page, but the main characters seem to be in the same place they'd been before, facing the same long term problems they've had for books.

There's some back and forth here between Sookie and Eric, unsurprisingly it deals with his new 'fiance' Freyda, but for me this book was about Sookie and Sam.  They've been friends throughout the entire series and I liked reading about their evolving relationship (without benefits) and how it effects them as people. Bill - blah, Eric - blah too, Alcide - please go away now; it was all about Sam for me in this book and even though Harris has said that Sookie is going to have her HEA with someone we haven't met yet, I'm still rooting for him.

Dark Symphony by Christine Feehan

Byron, a Carpathian male and hunter of the vampire follows the sound of compelling music to Italy. There he discovers his lifemate, Antoinetta Scarletti, heiress to the great Scarletti fortune. A renowned concert pianist, Antoinetta is the glue that holds the Scarletti family together. Blinded in an explosion that killed her parents, she nevertheless stands to run the family shipping business.

Antoinetta lives in the palazzo della morte, the palace of death. There, like her ancestors, she finds someone wants her dead. Antoinetta has a few secrets of her own and together, Byron and Antoinetta face the killers and one out of control Carpathian youth.
~~

The ups and downs of Feehan's Carpathian series are pretty extensive. As one of the original queens of vampire romance her alpha males and the women who 'save them from the darkness' are well known. This is great if you're new to the genre and looking for something different, but it's bad when a book lets you down (*cough* Dark Predator *cough*). I've been reading her for years and own 95% of the series - Dark Symphony is one of my favorites and I'm happy to report showcases some of the good qualities that have made Feehan so popular.

Yes Byron can be a bit of tyrant. Thankfully he's a self-aware tyrant who tries to do better. He's immediately drawn to Antoinetta because of her music and when he follows it he finds his lifemate in a strong woman that even while blind is the heart and soul of her family. Her injury doesn't prevent her from making her own decisions and her knowledge, culled from people who think that blind somehow also implies deaf, is incredibly helpful in securing and maintaining her family's wealth.

When the two of them come together sparks fly and even though they're immediately drawn to each other (duh, lifemates) there are assumptions that both of them have to get past. I liked this couple quite a bit, especially with their connection to another Feehan favorite of mine, Gothic romance The Scarletti Curse. There are intriguing supporting characters and you can never quite get your finger on the 'who dunnit' until the very end. I recommend it as one of the standouts of the series, though I admit it reads better if you understand all the history introduced in previous books.

Guarding Jess by Shannon Curtis *ARC Review*

Jessica Pennington's work as an etiquette coach requires her to be polite and proper at all times, especially now that she has a book coming out. The only thing that rattles her reserve is the increasingly violent emails and texts from her persistent stalker. With the book launch in jeopardy, she reluctantly hires a bodyguard.

Noah Samuels hates stuck-up, prim people like Jessica. He's more the blunt, straightforward type. But to advance up the ranks at McCormack Security, he has to take the high-profile assignment. After a near miss on his first day on the job, Noah realizes that the stalker isn't just hype cooked up to sell books—the threat is real.

As the stalker escalates from letters to letter bombs, Noah sees a vulnerable side of Jessica that rouses more than just his protective instincts. But can she let down her guard long enough to trust Noah before it's too late?
~~

I didn't love the description of this, sounded too much like the alphole Harlequin novels of my past, but it ended up being a very nice read! From the beginning readers get to be in the heads of both Jessica and Noah and for me it makes the story that much better. Without a character's motivation their actions can be a bit of a mystery - figuring out why the HEA works can turn into too much work for me or even less meaningful.

Luckily it's not a concern here. We're quickly introduced to Jessica and Noah, who's been hired to solve the mystery of Jessica's escalating-in-intensity stalker. There are sparks right from the start, though both are of course determined to keep things on a professional level. It's hard to do that though when you've got a well mannered man moving into your house for god knows how long to make sure no one hurts you.

As any good suspense novel should, Curtis keeps the reader guessing about who the stalker actually is. There are plenty of options floating around and when it literally could be anyone, what can you do? I've only got a few quibbles with the story and it's ending - first of all I knew how the stalker was getting in by what felt like the second chapter. I don't want to spoil anything, but come on guys, you're the professionals so let's use our brains here. Second when things with the stalker really started escalating it all seemed to be rushed near the end of the novel. Suddenly things got very violent with 'final consequences' and I wasn't prepared for it at all. I think the romance elements that had been taking up the bulk of the story lulled me into a false sense of comfort and then I out of the blue I couldn't count on anything. Still even with all that the HEA was satisfying, and the only thing I left wishing for was more time with Jessica and Noah so I could read further about  their recovery from the stalker's path of destruction.

Yep that's me!
April wasn't so bad in the book department! The weather was totally crazy (hot as hell one day, scarf and coat the next) but my books kept me company even when I couldn't stick to my 'no new clothes or shoes' rule. I had a great time at the Arlington Library Book Sale though and am looking forward to some even more awesome book-centric events this month!

Mini Me: Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father (a professional taxidermist who created dead-animal hand puppets) and a childhood of wearing winter shoes made out of used bread sacks. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.

Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter are the perfect comedic foils to her absurdities, and help her to uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments-the ones we want to pretend never happened-are the very same moments that make us the people we are today.

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir is a poignantly disturbing, yet darkly hysterical tome for every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud. Like laughing at a funeral, this book is both irreverent and impossible to hold back once you get started.
~~

I loved this book. I speak as someone who loves TheBloggess already, but this novel spoke to me on many levels. It's reassuring to find someone who's trying to be normal in the midst of being crazy. The kind of crazy that hides pretty well and yet leaves you feeling alone even when you're surrounded by people. Reading Lawson's book makes you think about how hard it can be just to go to work every day. Her words made me laugh out loud and cry a little, somewhat of rarity for me these days, and it's my new favorite book to recommend to people.

The Witness by Nora Roberts

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems. Her own security is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town. The mystery of Abigail Lowery intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and a professional level. Her sharp, logical mind, her secretive nature, her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, even if he doesn’t know what — and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.

Accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, Gleason is about to walk into the sights of very powerful and dangerous men. And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.
~~

Nora Roberts was not playing around with The Witness - she really hit it out of the park with her 200th novel. It's true that I usually like her books, there are more of her releases on my shelves than probably anyone else, but I think this story is definitely going into the 'favorites' category. It's just got so many of the characteristics that stick with you:

-A strong, intriguing heroine
-An honest and protective hero, one who's determined to get the girl
-Small town setting with the required quirky characters
-Fast paced action and a devilishly handsome bad guy

When I look at that least it just screams 'WHAT ELSE COULD YOU POSSIBLY ASK FOR?!' From start to finish I loved Abigail and her determination to not only protect herself and her lifestyle, but also do what's right - Brooks confused the hell out of her and their romance was sweet and hilarious. It's hard to combat that 'good ol' boy' charm when you can't even figure out how to say no to a date you didn't realize was a date in the first place.

The other thing I loved about this book was just how well the suspense plotline was intertwined with the romance. Instead of incorporating unnecessary confrontations or shoot outs Roberts focuses on the small steps, the ones that sometimes feel insignificant, to get the bad guy and it allows Abigail to shine as an incredible heroine - and Brooks as an amazing hero.

Highly recommended.
