Thirsty Thursdays (7/29) - The Eternal Battle

Thirsty Thursdays is hosted by Dana at Reading Amidst the Chaos and anyone can join in!

To share in the debauchery just think
of one of your favorite alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages and say why you love it and how to make it! You can link to your own blog or leave a comment below with your choice, but please include the mixology of whatever it is so that other people can give it a try!

I have one question: coffee or tea?

I think this week I'd rather hear from you guys about a topic that seems to always be up for contention: wine. White or red, full bodied or dessert, it's a choice that apparently says a lot about you (though I wouldn't really know what exactly). I'm a VERY recent wine convert, as in I didn't
enjoy or drink it before last year, and I just don't understand the hype. I will admit up front that I like the most unsophisticated of wines - very sweet whites. I'm unable to recognizes any notes and I really don't care what a wine should be 'paired' with. I just drink the ones I like with everything.

So - how about you guys? Which wines are your favorites? Can you tell the difference between good ones and bad ones?

I reached out to a friend of mine for this Thursday's Thirsty, but I have to agree that what she picked is fantastic! I
don't care what kind of hot day or hot food you're having, a Mango Lassi is always refreshing. Relatively easy, most of the recipes I've found involve yogurt, mango, & milk, which also makes it better for you than most American milkshakes (no ice-cream). Of course I am somewhat culinary challenged and don't even own a blender, so it's doubtful that one of these would be coming out fresh from my kitchen anytime soon. Though because of how delicious it is I hope that one of you out there learns how to make it for yourself! (maybe you can think of someway to cheat and not use a blender - that would be cool)

This week I've chosen a drink that is *not* for the faint at heart. The blue motorcycle is the non-Coke lovers
version of the Long Island Iced Tea and one or more of these can make sure you have a GREAT evening. Everything might be a little fuzzy, but you're going to have a great time none the less.

Instead of Coke this drink has Sprite, along with some Curacao which is the ingredient that gives it its blue color. I actually like this quite a bit but depending on your bartender it can be hit or miss. If you're planning a wild and crazy evening, why not add a blue motorcycle into your midst? Never hurts to try something new!

To try and beat the heat this week, why don't you whip up your very own Godiva Chocolate Martini? I had one of
these for the first time a few months ago, but with the 93 degree heat that's enveloping DC I'm inspired to try and make it myself. I'm not sure if the one I had was exactly this same recipe, I think it might have been a restaurant specialty, but it doesn't really matter now does it? It just shows to show you that this treat can be made a multitude of ways and each one will be delicious. And varying degrees of alcoholic ;)

This time I'm coming out with a summer beer that I've stumbled upon this season and really enjoyed - Honey Moon.
I know, I know - I can't tell you how to make it, but at least I can let you know to try it right?!?!

It's by the makers of the beer Blue Moon, but for me that doesn't say a whole lot because I've always thought that Blue Moon as a beer was terribly overrated. It always looked better than it tasted, no matter what kind of spiffy orange slice was sitting on the rim.

Honey Moon is just a bit more palatable to me and actually has that enjoyable sit in the sun and drink away quality that everyone's always trying to convince me that beer has. If you get a chance I'd definitely recommend that you pick some up and try it on your own - let me know what you think if you do!

I don't know what made me think of it, but this week I want to highlight Brazil's national cocktail, the Caipirinha. It has three ingredients: sugar, lime, and a liquor made from fermented sugarcane. I had this for the first time a couple of months ago at a Brazillian tapas place and was surprised by how good it was! It's another one of those drinks that go down easy, though because it's most ly liquor you don't ever really forget that you're consuming an acoholic beverage. Either way my friends warned me that a few of those can very quickly put you over your limit, so especially make sure to drink these with caution!

This picture isn't actually a picture of the drink I'm going to feature this week, but since the drink doesn't have a title we're all just going to have to settle for this pretty picture of cranberry juice on ice.

The drink I want to talk about this week is my favorite for at home parties. It's way easy, there are a million ways to customize it, and it always tastes delicious. What I'm talking about is a mix of Rum, Pineapple Juice, and Cranberry Juice. It sounds simple I know, but once you mix everything together it results in this very refreshing, nicely fruity, drink. I mention the ease of customization specifically, because there is a whole world of wonderfully flavored rum out there that you can use to make this drink your own. I've tried raspberry flavored rum, pineapple flavored, even non-flavored run of the mill rum, and the combination has always turned out delicious. The only thing that you have to watch out for is that this drink doesn't taste alcoholic. Unless you're really watching yourself the chances of getting smashed are high because it goes down like kool-aid.

I decided this week to go with something refreshing without the alcohol and pick a drink that's good to have no matter what mood you're in - the ever so classic Shirley Temple. This used to be my drink
of choice whenever I went out for dinner, I think because while on their own Sprite could be too plain and Grenadine could be too sweet, together they were phenomenal. I linked to the Wikipedia page, but I'm not sure if I agree with adding a maraschino cherry or a slice of orange. I like my Shirley Temple undisturbed by any fruit, mostly because while I like grenadine and cherry flavored things, I hate maraschino cherries.

**shudder**

I unfortunately don't have as much cause to go to Chili's or Ruby Tuesdays as often as I did in North Carolina, but if you find yourself in a semi-nice sit down restaurant, I recommend that you give the Shirley Temple another chance and let it win your heart away from those oh so simple, unadorned, fountain beverages.

With all the rain this week I've just been mesmerized by thoughts of the beach, of cruises, of ANYTHING that would
involve me, my bathing suit, and lots of time to relax. Those lovely little daydreams also include drinks most of the time, and unsurprisingly these visions of sand and sun were paired with a very appropriate one, the Sex on the Beach. Again one of my favorites in the early days of my drinking history, it's made with vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and cranberry juice. Probably as I continue to do these, readers will notice that I do have a theme - fruity. By and large most of my favorite drinks are fruity and a lot of them will contain either vodka or rum. I know I should probably experiment more, but why mess with a good thing?

This week I'm going to highlight the first drink I liked after turning 21 - the Amaretto Sour. I know, I know - it's heralded as one of those too sweet girly drinks most of the time, but I still think it deserves some love! Who says that whatever alcoholic beverage you're indulging in can't also taste good? Beer might, *might*, have it's time and place but I always think a good, tart, amaretto sour can definitely hit the spot.

P.S - I have tried many other brands of amaretto besides the much hyped Disaronno, so don't be afraid to experiment with something less pricey!

Thirsty Thursdays (5/6)

In honor of long ago college Thursdays, nights spent with friends in Armadillo Grill eating chicken nachos and consuming mixed drinks (Adult Kool-Aid anyone?) I've decided to implement Thirsty Thurdays. These posts are going to highlight some of my favorite shots/shooters/mixed drinks and include links so you can make them on your own time!

**DISCLAIMER: Any type of alcoholic beverage should be consumed in safe amounts and no one should ever attempt to drive a car or any other type of machinery while intoxicated.***

This week I'm going to talk about a shooter I had for the first time in Dublin that is really sweet but REALLY good - The Baby Guinness. It's called a 'Guinness' because the combination of coffee liquor and Baileys creates a shooter with a dark bottom and a light, cream colored head: just like an actual Guinness.

I was taught to make this with
Tia Maria but I think any coffee liquor will work - and changing up the flavor of Baileys you use is another way to customize this to your tastes. I love making this drink with regular Baileys, but I've got to admit that caramel flavored is the BOMB!
